Brand Focus - Bow

Here at MrMMA we are committed to doing all we can to try and improve the state of the martial arts industry in Australia. We take great pride in being able to say that we carry more Australian brands than many of our competitors do. This is very important to us because there are so many great Australian brands popping up that are doing some amazing things that don’t have the exposure they deserve. This is also a real shame for our customers because the quality of products being produced here is truly world class but unless retailers get behind these brands they are often overlooked. The next big global brand could be right here in our backyard but unless these guys get the support they deserve the path to success can be a very difficult one.

One of the brands that we think is going to explode in a major way very soon is Bow. They are now our number one selling brand of fight shorts and whe you see the quality of their workmanship you will understand why. Their range of products is truly built with the fighter in mind. Their quality and price are unbeatable, and we are really happy that they are starting to kick some major goals both locally and internationally.

Bow is owned by Jack Bongers and we recently had the opportunity to pick Jack’s brain and find out a little more about this great brand.

INTERVIEW WITH JACK BONGERS, FOUNDING DIRECTOR OF BOW

When did Bow begin?

2014.

What was the inspiration behind Bow?
In 2013, I travelled to Thailand to train in martial arts. I lived close to a well-known MMA gym and trained with like-minded people. I soon realised it was a similar passion for martial arts and training that brought all of these people from different backgrounds together. It was this feeling, this mix of people and this energy that grew and developed; that inspired me to create Bow. This is why, from the very beginning, Bow has always been about the team Bow Fighters.

Where did the name “Bow” come from?
Looking back, the name came really easy to me. I wanted something that would stand out from other MMA brands from the very beginning and that people would immediately understand. I wanted to break the stereotypes. The bow in martial arts is a great tradition - a sign of humility, respect and honour shown towards your opponent. Without your opponent you never reach the full potential of your character.

Are there any other brands that you really admire and take inspiration from?
I started Bow because I believe that a lot of fight brands were not reflecting the true nature of martial arts. So it’s tough question. I was always on the search for a fight brand that connected with me. I do like RVCA a lot. However I don’t think they are an authentic fight brand and think they do more surfing and skate stuff now. But I do like the brand.

Do you have a favourite design?
Man, my favourite part of all our designs would be the balance of our yin yang lifestyle. Bow is designed for combat and for lifestyle.

Guys like Dan Hardy and Uriah Hall are big fans of Bow. How did you hook up with these guys?
From the beginning I noticed that what we were trying to do struck with people within the sport. It started with Hector Lombard. I went to meet him at a UFC signing and introduced myself. From that moment he has been a big support or of the team and what we stand for.  Following on from that came Dan Hardy and Uriah Hall in very similar methods.

Any new designs you can give us a sneak preview of?
Got a couple new items coming.  I'll give you a preview as soon as I can.

Any chance we will see a Bow gi in the future?
I have always been asked about gi's. It’s something we are opening to discussing with everyone for sure.

Where will Bow be in 5 years?
5 years from now I see us creating a one of a kind fight team including all martial artists with a strong understanding of movement and combat; a team that reflects the Next Generation.

What drives you?
What drives me is to live the life of a martial artist, humble, respectful, calm, a study of the game and a student of life. I want to create a team that is stronger than its individual parts. I want to create a brand that stands alone in the sport and builds the Next Generation.

Is there anyone we should be keeping an eye on as a future champ?
Personally I love watching the rise to the top of the sport more than just seeing someone dominate. This is why I have always tried to assist and promote the next generation of guys.

Two guys I would suggest to keep an eye on are Israel Adysanya who is a New Zealand kick boxer and an incredible talent. He was the first Glory kickboxing signed fighter out of New Zealand. He is now fighting MMA and looking to get a UFC contract. You will see him on our social media pages and website.

Also, Jake Lund who is a Muaythai fighter based in Brisbane. Again a young and hungry up and coming fighter. John Wayne Parr actually has mentioned him as the future of Muaythai on the Joe Rogan Experience.

On behalf of MrMMA we would like to thank Jack for his time and for allowing us inside his brand.
